“Is he okay?” Lauren rested her head on Adam’s chest.

“I don’t know.” Adam ran his fingers through her hair. “He’s confused. Upset.”

Lord, he’s all alone, Lauren thought. That’s not good for him. “Maybe we should have him come meet us.”

“I thought about that,” Adam said, “but at some point he needs to stand on his own. He needs to exercise his faith. We’ll pray and hopefully make it home for the funeral.” Adam yawned. “It’s going to be a long day.”

“You’re telling me,” Lauren said. “Apparently I’ve been cut off from caffeine. How long until we get to Oregon?”

“Should be soon.” Adam kissed the top of her head. “First stop is to get coffee for me and then somewhere to find pretty Bible study pens for you. A whole pack of them.”
